The Glen Clova Run

Sunday 9th October 2011

Where has the year gone? It only seems like yesterday that we were all out enjoying the first run of the year (Maggie’s Run) and here we are on the last Central Scotland run of the year and also my last run as Area Co-ordinator. The weather looked pretty grim as we drove up to the start point at Kinross in the rain. Carol and Evan’s car was the only MX-5 in the car park when Jacqueline and I pulled in; they were pleased to see us as they had thought the run had been cancelled due to the weather. A little bit of rain doesn't put us off, we’re tougher than that and sure enough the cars all started to arrive. Ali & Drew, Chris, Susan & David and last but definitely not least Sue & Gordon

The start point at Kinross

With all the tops up, our six cars headed off on the winding roads through Milnathort, Glenfarg, and Bridge of Earn before slipping onto the M90 then A90 to Glendoick garden centre. Here we were joined by Allie, Jen & Tom (and little Jake, looking very smart with his latest hair cut), Alex and Colin our Tayside friends, in another four cars. As the weather had now improved and the sun was shining, the tops were lowered. We enjoyed a few moments chatting together while we waited for one of our members (who had gone into the garden centre for a handbag) to appear with what must be the most expensive fried egg roll in the world (an eye watering £3.95). Still, I’m sure it was delicious and less expensive than a handbag.

Continuing on the run, we wound our way past Kilspindie, Kinnaird, Abernyte and on to Newtyle where we were joined by Dot and Ian from Tayside taking the car count up to 11.

The next part of the run saw us driving past Glamis Castle and through Kirriemuir and up into Glen Clova. Driving up the glen the rain clouds gathered and it looked like our drive in the sunshine could be coming to an end. Pressing on through the drizzle we finally arrived at the Glen Clova Hotel just as the sun once again came out to find yet another Tayside member’s red Mk3.5 parked at the door. Now, we were twelve cars. Some reversed perilously close to some rather large boulders in the car park, thankfully without actually touching any. Thirsty and hungry we all headed to the hotel for sustenance.

Following a hearty lunch and the usual banter we headed back down the glen to Kirriemuir then onto the Glen Isla road. Onwards through Blairgowrie and the brilliant A923 to Dunkeld where a few members were welcomed by the friendly smiling face of the municipal toilet attendant, ‘that’ll be 30 pence each she growled’. The run finally ended at the Glover Arms in Perth, where we all said our goodbyes. The end of another great year of Central Scotland runs made even more enjoyable by sharing it with our friends from the Tayside area.
