Moffat Classic Car Rally

The weather forecast foretold of a glorious roof down day and so it was to be.
A great turnout of 18 cars met up at Dobbies, Cumbernauld with a few new faces joining us for their first run.  It was possible that the number of Mk3s were outnumbered by the increasing number of Mk4s made up in number by a few Mk1s and 2s.
Even at 10 in the morning the heat was building and so we set off in order to get the wind in our hair (or lack of in my case!)

We skirted around the west side of Cumbernauld, heading for Longriggend and Caldercruix on great B roads before crossing the M8 at Harthill and on to Forth. We managed to stay together fairly well but with 18 cars it was inevitable that gaps would develop and I slowed/stopped the leading convoy a couple of times for the rear to catch up.

After Forth we headed to Carnwath when Tom and Anne joined us. Onwards to Biggar where we seemed to lose a number of cars when some took a right turn instead of left towards the town centre. This was caused by the convoy being spread out due to other slow cars, a lack of radios and TomToms. It looks like we might have to supply route guidance notes again as this was the second run where we lost cars.

Anyway we carried on and eventually reached Broughton where we turned right on the A701 before turning off for the run over the hills via Talla and Megget reservoirs to our stop at the Glen Cafe  by St Mary’s Loch. Luckily we did not meet many cars on the narrow roads over the hills and especially not on the verrow section on the climb up from Talla.

We found parking spaces at the very busy cafe and waited for the missing cars to arrive. Eventually after 10 - 15 minutes the back markers arrived and we had a comfort break, ice cream, snacks and chat before setting off for Moffat. We met up with a large group of cyclists also heading to Moffat and they hogged the road making overtaking difficult. They were a bit upset at some of the overtaking cars but after them holding up a large group of cars for long distances, frustration sets in. They could at least have gone onto single or double file to make the manoeuvre a bit easier.

Anyway we all arrived at a very busy Moffat car show where the well organised stewards managed to find parking spaces for us but we were spread all over the large fields. On to the show (with some wives deciding to go into town for a coffee and chat) and after paying our fiver entry fee we found a big display of cars and bikes from very old to very new. The weather made the day and the queues for ice creams and drinks was long. Shade was at a premium and some of the owners who decided to sit by their cars looked at bit overheated. Still it was great to see such a big turnout and the effort that goes into some of the displays was commendable.

After a couple of hours it was time to look for some food so a few of us walked up to town for a cold drink and a bite to eat  before heading off for home.

It was a great day out with a super run, superb weather and some great cars to bring back memories of our early motoring days.
I trust the new members had an enjoyable first run and look forward to seeing you in the future.

I saw you lot arriving yesterday. Definitely busier than last year as the parking was much much busier.
Good show but oh so hot - I parked my Eunos with the roof up and just about scalded my hand putting it back down!
Spoke to some ladies who were cycling LE to JOG and were about to start the climb out of Moffat - too hot for that.

Great run out and leading the tail enders after we got lost was a challenge! still we made it in one piece despite getting caught up in the Tour De Dumfriesshire!! ..... Shouldn't we have an MX5OC Pitch in the show though?

Thanks to everyone for making me feel so welcome & a great day out Great roads to drive on (Well done Drew), beautiful scenery I didn't get to see much but watched my dash cam when I got home. Sorry for loosing the lead cars at the Talla and Megget reservoirs, was a tight road. :-)
Looking forward to the next one.
