First Run 2018

Sunday 25th March 2018

Well we could not have asked for a better day for our first run of the year.
When Jim and I arrived at the car park at 11:15am most of all the cars had arrived, especially all the new members as they were keen to begin their first MX5 run. Jim then called us all together [group hug] giving out written material and a safety talk. At 12:00pm the convoy left the car park, roofs down as we set off.

We began the run with 24 shiny showroom condition cars, we went through UFO land, Bonnybridge [a little detour from last year], the small Scottish town of Bonnybridge, bills itself the UFO capital of the world. According to its colourful local councillor, now Falkirk Council Provost Billy Buchanan, almost half of the town’s residents have seen a UFO at one time or another and on a yearly basis, around 300 sighting reports are received from Bonnybridge and its surrounding area.

We skirted Bathgate [this year missing the speed bumps] and over the Bangour road and the grounds of where; Bangour Village Hospital was a psychiatric hospital the first patients were admitted in June 1904. In 1918 Bangour General Hospital was created in the grounds, but the hospital began winding down in 1989 with services being transferred to the newly built St. John's Hospital in Livingston. The final ward at Bangour eventually closed in 2004. We then headed towards Dobbies for a comfort break.

After the warm drinks, we had another ‘group hug’ when Jim reminded everyone about the next 2 roundabouts heading to Dechmont. Guess what! we lost two cars. Only for 5 minutes. We then set off down to Dechmont over the hills skirting Linlithgow and up past the Scottish Korean War Memorial, On the mounds are 110 Korean Fir trees and around 1100 Scottish trees representing the servicemen who were killed. The site, which is the only Korean War memorial in Scotland, opened on the 20th June 2000, marking the 50th anniversary of the war's commencement. We then passed Cairnpapple Hill, Cairnpapple’s henge dates from about 3800 BC. Centuries later the landscape was chosen for a number of Bronze Age burials. Much later still, it was used for early Christian graves.  Then down towards Torphichen as the Avon gorge was closed last week for repairs we then headed for Linlithgow Bridge towards Bo’ness via Nether Kinneil where we had fantastic views over the River Forth. As the convoy stayed together and we had no incidents we arrived at the Corbie Inn too early.

We were met with a warm welcome from Gail the owner and her staff but the Christening party were still in the function room [we were too early] It did not stop the hardy MX5 family of 40 people, we sat in the Beer Garden in the sunshine until our allotted time. After the meal it was raffle time and £142 was collected for our new Charity Air Ambulance. Thank you to all for the donations of prizes and all who participated.

As usual the first run of the year was short as the weather in March is so unpredictable. However, the MX5 style roads, chat and laughter of the new and old members mixing together, made a good MX5 event.
Well done Jim
