The October Weekend

Saturday 7th to Sunday 8th October 2017

Day One – 7th October

Well here we are at the end of another year of the Central Club planned drives.
The itinerary for this year would see us travel first to the southwest, then east to our overnight stop, followed by a wee bit “across the border” before heading back north to end at Peebles.
Meeting up at the Whitelee Windfarm on a rather damp & mizzle day, the windfarm was only partially visible – the first 20m of the pylons, so definitely not a “tops down” departure.
After a meet and greet, cuppa and scone, 8 cars set off cross country for Mauchline, Drongan & Maybole.  As we headed west & neared the Ayrshire coast, blue skis could be seen ahead and the opportunity to drop the roofs was taken.
Onwards to Girvan we stopped at the Woodlands Bay restaurant for another superb lunch of sandwiches, rolls and cake washed down with tea or coffee.  With food still left over, many took a “snack in the box” with us when we left.

Grey skies hovered over the hills when we set off and some tops stayed up, but as we progressed towards Dailly, the weather was clearing nicely, roads drying up and so the tops came down.  We stayed this way till Lockerbie, enjoying the afternoon sun and rather pleasant 17°C as we traversed the enjoyable B741 & B729 to Moniaive, which are always good fun with quiet roads.

We had a brief stop at Moniaive to allow all to re-group, and then carried on cross country from Duncow, reaching the Hotel on schedule at 1600hrs.
The fairly clean cars when we set off were not so clean now, the effects of the rain over the period and the farmers being out, had left some a bit dirtier than others.  Ian & Irene’s new Mk4 was now not as gleaming on the flanks as it had been: - the joys of a white car!

At the hotel we met up with Ali & Drew who had come down for the Hotel night, but unfortunately couldn’t manage the runs this year.

The Dryfesdale Hotel

For dinner, we were provided with our own room away from the Wedding guests.  After a lovely 3 course meal, we moved to a side room to have the Raffle & Quiz - 3 teams competing against each other and although the resident compere could not be with us, the quiz was none the less no easier and the banter no less noisy.

Somehow, the winning team with Alan went away with the sweeties which he shared with all.
Additional helpings of gummies were also shared out.

Having had all that fresh air on the run, a lovely meal followed by the banter of the quiz, it was time to retire for the night with a mid-morning departure set, a leisurely breakfast would be had.

Day Two – 8th October.

A late breakfast for all & check out completed, the cars were loaded and then followed a closer examination of the Mk 4 vs Mk 3 – the tape measure even appeared!  After that, we lined up outside the hotel for Drew to take some group photos before we departed the Dryfesdale Hotel.

The Sunday roads were quiet as we headed south to Annan for a fuel stop then onwards through Gretna and across the metal bridge heading to Bowness on Solway.  The tide was well out and the wind non-existent so there was no problem of the Eastern Marsh being flooded – lots of roads signs indicate the water depth over the road when flooding occurs!  Stopping at Bowness for a quick leg stretch and photos, it was onward back on a circular route to Gretna for lunch at the Blacksmiths.

With lunch over and returning to the carpark, some cars had the bonnets up again; I think this was a how clean is yours vs the Mk4 on the inside this time!
And so on to the last leg north to Peebles, via Chapelknowe and Langholme (no ice cream this year!) we stayed on the A7 until just before Hawick before taking the B711, B709 and B7062 to Cardrona.

From there we headed towards Peebles, parking up at Bony’s for a refreshment stop, etc and from there we disbanded to make our way homewards, ending this year’s runs.

A total run of around 265miles was covered over the 2 days, in mostly drier weather than expected with the sun shining and with little wind on the Sunday making it a fitting end to the year.

We hope that you enjoyed the choice of lunch venues and hotel.  Overall I think they catered for us as well as during last years outing.
Our thanks go to you all for making it an enjoyable outing.  To James and Joyce on what was their 2nd club run since joining, hope to see you again.  Thanks also extended to Bobbie & Richard for taking the tail position just in case others went astray, and to Drew for the group photo shoot.

Thanks all for being there.
Roll on 2018.
