Jane and Jon Lane.

So, when would Jonny Depp, Popeye, a Baywatch Babe, a German Captain and a pretty little thing in a Victorian swimsuit, a collection of misfit pirates and Miss Matey all meet....no?  Ok, I’ll tell you, on Jane and Jon’s Midsummer Sundowner Run, that’s where!!
The theme was nautical and fancy dress was a must! The Crew met at 18.00 in the romantic setting of Sainsbury’s car park, Nairn, before setting sail for Whitehills, on the coast of Aberdeenshire.  As is the norm for the Sundowner runs, there would be a number of prizes on offer throughout the night. This year however had a couple of added attractions. One, a quiz to be held in the restaurant, with points deducted for anyone not using ‘Pirate speak’ on the CBs, this meant a keen ear was needed to make sure you went port and starboard at various junctions! The other, a sinister brown envelope handed to each crew member with strict instructions that it could only be opened once turned hard a port at Keith!!
The route took the fleet from Nairn, through Elgin and onto Keith, before turning onto some great and twisty A and B roads. This route had an added thrill, as at this point Capt. Jonnie announced that the passengers could open the envelopes.  Oh the joy, as they realised they were to make a paper boat and colour it in as they were thrown left and .....sorry, port and starboard along the A95!
The pirate speak went very quiet for a while and a few crew looked a tad green, landlubbers!
As the fleet disembarked on the Whitehills harbour side in brilliant sunshine, they were greeted with smiles and waves from passersby. At least we made folk laugh! The restaurant, (The Galley) pre-warned of our attire, were still a little gobsmacked by our appearances and joined in the fun, as did the fellow diners.
The quiz was held as the pre booked food was prepared. The Galley Restaurant was faultless and the food and staff superb. The sun shone in and all had a great time with many a good laugh. Popeye ate his spinach and Capt. Jonnie his fish n chips.
After dinner we took a short drive to a small play-park with a sandy beach where the boats were judged and launched.  A sight to behold.  Here the first of the prizes was awarded. before one of the pirates went to play on the slides and Popeye enjoyed his time in the wheelhouse of a huge life-size play boat....you really had to be there!!
Then it was back aboard and fleet set sail once more, this time for Portessie and the opening of the now famous Betty’s Bar. Betty’s only opens once a year and is found in the boot of Jane’s now fully restored Mk2.5. The bar, complete with neon name sign and flashing glass skulls, served mocktails and for those who dared, a shot, well two, of good warming rum. The sun sank into the cloud, so the perfect sunset sadly vanished, but no one seemed to mind. As darkness gathered the fleet made haste back along uncharted A and B roads along the coast, through Buckie, Portgordon and back to Elgin.

On setting anchor at Nairn, we said our goodbyes, with many a hug and not a few kisses....thanks Popeye!!
The weather had remained bright and sunny if a little chilly throughout the night enabling us to enjoy a roof down run to the sundown and back under night skies.
Prize winners were:
Best dressed man:  (Popeye) Charles Sinclair.
Best nautical tune:  (Rod Stewart, We are sailing) Bobby and Debbie Sinclair.
Best dressed woman:  (Baywatch Babe) Dorothy Green.
Quiz winners:  Dorothy and Andy Green.
Flounder catchers: Jim and Emma Lane.
Thanks to all for attending and making our second Sundowner Run a success.

Jane and Jon Lane.
