Mk 3.75 - Rear Brake Pads

Postby Reg Molehusband » Thu Jun 15, 2017 8:11 pm

Hello all - have not been here for quite a while!

My other half has a Mk 3.75 from new and the only problem at the first MOT was the rear brake pads were almost down to the metal, after 35,000 miles. This really surprised me and I hadn't thought to check them beforehand as the fronts do most of the work. The pistons were not sticking and the discs are fine. Just thought this might be worth flagging up for others.

This is usual with the Mk3 rear brakes anyting from 20,000 miles to 30,000 miles before being changed. The main thing to flag up is owners should check their disc pad thickness every few months and do not assume the will not be worn.

Thanks Eddie for the confirmation and for the good advice. Can you think of the reason why the rear pads wear much more quickly? My trusty MOT chap said that front pads are generally replaced twice as often as rear ones - but I suppose there are wide variations to this. One thought might be that the Mk 3 rear brakes are designed to 'work a bit harder' to keep the discs from corroding so much - maybe the pad contact area is less, requiring more pressure with greater wear? I'm just thinking out loud here!
