problems with clutch

Postby davidrirvine » Thu May 25, 2017 8:55 pm

I have a 1.6 Mk2 and today had to nurse the car home. Every time i applied some gas the revs increase but not the speed. I have had slipping clutches in other cars and symptoms are the same. Once home I did the car into 2nd brake on and bring clutch up test and engine stalled. Any ideas, simple checks I should be doing? Also if it is a new clutch what typically would I be looking at for a garage replacement?

Thanks

Could be the clutch slave cylinder, have a google and you'll likely find lots of information.

From your description either oil leaking on to the clutch from the rear engine main seal or from the gearbox or the springs on the clutch cover have failed.

Cost circa £350 to £500 depending on the garage you go to.

Most clutch kits consist of a clutch cover plate, clutch disc and a clutch release bearing.

The MX5 has another bearing in the flywheel called the spiggot bearing and that has to be changed at the same time.

You should also change the clutch slave cylinder.

If there is an oil leak on to the clutch this is the engine rear oil seal

If there is an oil leak on the clutch from the gearbox then you need this part.

You will also need 2 ltrs of 75W/90 gear oil to refill the gearbox.

Thanks for the information. If it is an oil leak, and I get this fixed, is it still a new clutch as well since the clutch plates been contaminated?

If the car has done over 40,000 miles it is a new clutch kit.

The labour is say £150 to £250. The extra for the clutch kit over the friction disk is say £75.

Too big a risk just to change the friction disc.

Thanks. Car has 106k. No idea if original clutch. Took it out today and no slipping but guess either time to get it done or just cut losses and sell the car on. It's in good condition bodily and underneath so someone who has the ability and time could get a nice car.
Thanks for your very comprehensive information.
