Mk3.75 Rustproofing

Postby drumtochty » Fri Nov 11, 2016 8:40 pm

Stuart has bought himself a 2014 Mk3.75 and decided we should rust proof the car!

The Bilthamber goo was ordered and Friday 11 November was set to get the first part of the work completed.

Stuart arrived at the crack of 11:05 am.

Therefore the car was lifted and the wheels removed.

The wheel arches liners on the front of the car do not come off completely as you see they hang down.

The only problem that causes is the space between the rear of the wheel arch and the front of the door is harder to see into to get the goo in there. You waste product as you get so many areas you miss and have to do again but you cannot see what you are spraying.

The usual missed area of rustproofing.

The rear arches.

There are three holes like this in each rear arch that allow access to the sills and the area behind the back of the door shut for goo.

Also the usual missed areas as below

We steam cleaned and scrubbed the areas to be covered by the goo and left it to dry with the heaters on in the garage.

At that point it was lunch time and we had well fired rolls, dairy free cheese with red onion garnished with Lidl potato sticks followed by Clootie dumpling.

Then we put of the disposable overalls Stuart is shown in Blue with me in the virginal white creation.

The front wheel arch treated with Dynax S50 as are all the areas under covers or in the sills or inside the chassis rails.

By 3:30 pm we had the wheel arches and underside completed.

The next session later in the month will be the engine compartment, the front of the sills, the doors and the boot internals.

We used Dynac UB on the underside areas that are subject to abrasion from the road and we will use Dynac UC clear wax in the doors, engine compartment, door internals and bonnet undersurface.

All wheel arch protectors back on, wheels torqued up and disposable overalls in the bin by 4:30.

Happy with what we did today!

Make sure you mask the brakes and when doing the front wheel arches there are two areas you need to stick newspaper etc in to stop you getting the goo over the engine etc.

Getting the goo behind the front wings is a pain due to the wheel archer liners at the front not coming off the suspension.

The stuff ruins overalls so have plenty gloves say a box of disposables and a five pack of disposable overalls.

The hood on those overalls is handy and have lots of paper towels to hand.

Blimey, this looks really messy!
Do you have any recommendations on who might offer this service in Lothian or Central Scotland?

They did my 1991 Eunos and I am very pleased with the finished article.

There should be pictures in my build thread on here.
Previously in a 2003 Montana, now in a 1991 V-Special...

I'm booked in with Preserve & Protect in April. I took my car for an estimate. Mark seemed very thorough and professional. I have full confidence.

Been to see them and they are chatty and knowledgeable. Took a long time to discuss what I wanted and showed me some examples. Going to see them in April when they might have some spare ramp time.

Sorry Moonshine, I've not looked on here for ages. The cost for my mk3.5 with Preserve & Protect was £525. There was quite a bit of rust underneath that may have made the cost a little higher, I don't know.
