Seeing these pictures, what wonders me is: how/why Mazda can give a 12yr corrosion warranty?

Because they know that long before the twelve years are reached, owners will have stopped having the cars dealer-serviced so Mazda can then wash their hands of the problem.

So that's the catch?
12 years dealer servicing to keep the warranty?

You have made that up I'm afraid Chelios.

The car must be inspected annually by a Mazda Authorised Repairer who will record the inspection on the Digital Service Record to keep the paint and surface corrosion warranty valid, 3 years and it does not include the underbody surfaces. The anti perforation warranty is 12 years and again needs this annual inspection by a Mazda Authorised Repairer who will record the inspection on the Digital Service Record.

Servicing is covered under the block exemtion regulation which came into full force in October 1983 in the UK. Any registered garage can service the vehicle but for the normal mechanical and electrical warranty be preserved they must service it in accordance with the manuafcturers service schedule and use parts and consumables to a similar standard to the manufacturer, there is no requirement to use Mazda parts if suitable aftermarket parts are available.

I'm simply asking...

Reason is, I've bought a new Mazda (not mx5 unfortunately), and I was wondering that given everything I've read on the forums, Mazda has given their cars a 12yr corrosion warranty.

I'd suggest reading it in detail, I'm sure it will be an anti perforation warranty and cover rust in the skin, not the stuff that comes from the inside out and typically gets these cars.

If we are talking modern Mazda's post 2005 and they are used in the South of England, then all things being equal they will last 12 years body wise.

If they are in Scotland and are not used in winter again they will last 12 years.

If they are used as a daily driver and are used north of Perthish and live be the sea, say Broughty Ferry or Stonehaven they may well need body repairs at 10 year old.

Of the older MK3's, I know of two cars around 06 reg that have needed body work fettling.

Of the others about that age, they are showing signs of rust on the underside at 9 years old but may well get to their 12th birthday without any repairs.

I know of no say 6 year old cars that are seing an approved Mazda repairer on a continuing basis and even then and I may be wrong, I think you have to ask for and pay the extra for the body inspection over and above a service.

I know in the case of the Subaru, you had to do this and no one does as they retreat and charge say £100 every say 5 years.

When I was looking for a MK3 I seen 5 or six cars before settling on one that suited my pocket and general condition was good ,
Most of the MK3s I seen had signs of corrosion , especially at rear wheel arches Driverside front wing at repeater (Nearly all had this bubbling at repeater at O/S only. anyone know why???even an 08 reg) also rust at quarter windows where water sits and is trapped, the one I ended up with had some corrosion at rear wheel arch which has been repaired , so if they have been left out in the elements year after year expect to find some corrosion from 06 on mk3s

Yes a southern Englandshire garage queen with low mileage is the one to go for.

To do your self the chemicals are circa £90 to £130 plus say two days work by you and a friend pretty mucky and while some do it outside with a trolley jack you have to be brave.

If you want it done in a garage, therefore you do not get dirty then you have a few options.

A quick underbody clean and the bare areas not origanally covered with wax or stonechip say £90 to £150 inc labour.

Next step is update the underneath areas you can see as above plus remove all the wheel arches protectors and apply a thin runny cavity wax to the cavitys under the car that are covered but where water and dampness can get in say in total £250 to £300 inc labour.

Then the final version would be also to add on the boot and bonnet area plus the internals of the doors and we are now around £400 to £450 including labour.

My NC is booked in with Preserve & Protect in Johnstone in a couple of weeks. They come highly recommended for under-sealing. I've been to visit them for a quote and they seem very thorough and reliable. They quoted me a little higher than the £450 mentioned here but my car has quite a bit of rust to get rid of. They had a NC on the ramps when I visited which was almost complete...it looked as though the job they had done was first class. As someone who doesn't do DIY, a company like this is invaluable. Money well spent I think.
