Garages in the far far north

Postby Mintums » Thu Nov 30, 2006 6:31 pm

Hi folks,

I'm looking for recommendations please for an MX5 specialist up near Thurso (although I could travel down to Inverness). Aberdeen / Glasgow / Edinburgh are possible at a push (although the 6 hour trip is putting me off a bit).

I've got a Mk2.5 which needs its 60k service and a replacement clutch.

The dealer prices in Inverness are a little more than I was looking to pay (it would be cheaper to drive down to the Midlands for a holiday and get the car done at to Sam Goodwins / Maztek and drive back home!).

Yours in hope

We have a similar car, so before you spend cash on the clutch anywhere, make enquiries at Maxda as to the malady ( juddering & sometimes rattling). You may be very lucky and discover it can be done partly (if not all as I experienced), under a "goodwill" warranty, I wont go on...lots of longer term owners here may give you advice. Your car model, if not your own, does tend to have (to a degree) clutch & pressure plate issue.
Just trying to save you cash! Good luck.

Not even going to ask about your Cambelt...another issue!

Just drove down from north of Wick to Arnold Clark, Girdleness Road, Aberdeen to get the timing belt changed. Don't know what the cost was as it was paid for by the branch that sold me the car and who promised to change the timing belt before I bought it. (Two weeks and endless phone calls and still no refund cheque for my fuel costs, let alone other costs, as they promised they would - but that's a whole other story).

There's not a lot of love lost between me and the branch that sold me the car, but the Aberdeen, Girdleness Road branch were excellent. Very friendly, helpful, professional, and the free-vend coffee machine with the free caramel biscuits in the wi-fi lounge waiting area where you could look through the glass wall at all the cars being professionally serviced made the best vending machine cappucino I've ever had :)

I stayed at a wonderful guest house in the heart of the city that was only £28/night which I can recommend if you PM me.

There is a Mackay & Dick in Inverness, but I have no experience of them.

If you are looking for best price without the travel, I know a couple of local car mechanics who are busy but who may be able to squeeze you in, including one who generally has the rep of being the best mechanic in Caithness, but he is very over-worked so may not be able to get around to you for a while.

Good luck!

I would recommend Station Garage in Golspie for any work/servicing of a MX5.
Roy Fraser has done the servicing on my MX5s for many years and his prices are fair
He is a racing driver and loves driving my MX5, he says it is one of the best handling cars ever.
